Sigiriya

The lion rock fortress in the sky

Matale District2 days recommendedJanuary to March (cool mornings)
Overview

About Sigiriya

Rising sheer from the central plains, Sigiriya (Lion Rock) was transformed into a sky-palace by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, climbed via a staircase that passes mirror walls, ancient frescoes and the colossal lion paws carved into the rock. The summit reveals the palace foundations, water gardens and a 360° view across the jungle canopy.
